More Information
If ever a winery deserved to be called a destination unto itself, that winery is Sterling Vineyards. Its dramatic site and distinctive architecture are immediately eye-catching. Its self-paced tour is unhurried and informative. Its fine wines, attractive tasting rooms and warm hospitality are unparalleled.
And getting there? At Sterling, getting there truly is, as they say, half the fun.
Sterling Vineyards sits atop a 300-foot knoll in the northernmost part of the Napa Valley, just south of the town of Calistoga. The white walls of the winery and visitors' center, rising dramatically from the wooded hill, have for 30 years made Sterling a landmark for locals and a beacon for wine-loving visitors.
The buildings themselves reflect remarkable international sources. The Greek derivation of the architecture is unmistakable, putting a viewer in mind of the white hillside towns of Mykonos. But there is an English influence as well: Sterling's famous bells, which chime every quarter hour, once graced St. Dunstan's Cathedral in London. The church was destroyed during World War II, but the bells ring on at Sterling, brought there by the winery's English founder.
One of the very special features of a visit to Sterling is the self-guided tour. The winery building was designed with the visitor in mind, incorporating galleries and overlooks that allow guests to view the whole process. Displays along the tourway thoroughly explain each aspect of the winemaking process. And best of all, each visitor can go on Sterling's tour at his or her own pace and take in the information that he or she wants: no giant groups, no tight schedules, just a relaxing, pleasurable experience.
For visitors who have already had enough wine tours, there's another exciting attraction in Sterling's winery building: the Sterling View Terrace. Located on the very south end of the winery, the terrace offers unparalleled views of the Valley - and is also an unparalleled venue for special wine tasting.
The main tasting rooms crown the hill and offer visitors a chance to sit and relax while they try some of Sterling's superb wines, from familiar favorites to special Reserves to unusual varietals generally available only to Sterling Cellar Club members. There are terraces for sunny summer days, a huge fieldstone fireplace for cold winter days, and fine wine and a gracious welcome all year through.
And did we mention getting there? At Sterling Vineyards, visitors don't just drive right up and walk right in. Instead, they ride up the hill aboard Sterling's famous and unique aerial tramway.
For its uniqueness, its informativeness and its fun, Sterling Vineyards certainly deserves the term "destination". And for its top-notch wines, scenic beauty and its friendly, courteous hospitality, it certainly merits its name, for each visit is truly a "Sterling" experience.
